Open an online dictionary whenever you need to do a reading task. Use a thesaurus whenever you practise writing.

Merriam-Webster online: http://www.m-w.com/

• Merriam-Webster's dictionary, collegiate version on intermediate level. Excellent. With sound files.

• Nice interface. Excellent and with sound files.

• Dictionary and thesaurus. Excellent. With sound files.

• An extensive and useful dictionary for advanced learners. It also opens a translation dictionary. Select the Translator option for that. No sound unless you subscribe and pay.

Interglot: http://www.interglot.com/

• Excellent translation dictionary with thesaurus and conjugations. More user-friendly than the previous one. No sound files.

Online encyclopaedias

This is an open source encyclopaedia, so be careful!

• Website from Kim Janssens, Mortsel. The website contains fine grammar, spelling and vocabulary exercises and projects for forms 1 - 4 (A1-A2).

• The Canadian site of the makers of Hot Potatoes with grammar tests, reading comprehension tests and writing tests. Level 420 is for the fourth form. Look for the grammar index under Extra.

• Free Hot Potatoes software: the suite includes six applications, enabling you to create interactive multiple-choice, short-answer, jumbled-sentence, crossword, matching/ordering and gap-fill exercises for the World Wide Web. Hot Potatoes is not freeware, but it is free of charge for non-profit educational users who make their pages available on the web.

• A site with short personality tests: IQ, EQ, relationship tests, concentration tests, etc. Students can take two to three tests an hour. With the longer tests you need to register. This site addresses women (queens).
