As part of the Gezelle-year 1999 - Gezelle
died in Brugge on the 27th of November 1899 - the Roeselaarse
Guiding Circle has planned a few cultural activities!
Since every guiding circle serves the purpose of promoting its
own town and region, it goes without saying that a better
understanding of historic events and famous personalities becomes
part of the general knowledge.
We should realise that Roeselare is the cradle of the Flemish struggle for emancipation in the 19th century, that everything started in the Klein Seminarie in Roeselare, around the person of Guido Gezelle. Therefore, a detailed study obout him and his era would be no luxury.
The Guiding Circle is planning the following
A course spread over three Saturday mornings will focuse on
the figure of Gezelle and his time. The socio - economical
situation in Roeselare is sketched as a background against which
the phenomenon of Gezelle appears. His time as a pupil (1846 -
1850) as well as a teacher (1854 - 1860) is dealt with at large.
How was Gezelle as a boy in this 'house of strictness'? Which
theoretic education did he get? What were the pedagogic and
didactic customs some 150 years ago in the episcopal board?
And especially: who and what was Guido Gezelle as teacher? What
was his contribution - whether spectacular or not - as a priest,
as an educator, as a language teacher, as a talented young poet?
What motives put him on the sidetrack, and kicked him upstairs to
Brugge after 6 years? This is the biggest part of the course
about the probably most exciting and dramatic period in the life
of a young priest.
The lessons take place in De Spil on Saturday the 20th and the
27th of February 1999 and the 6th of March 1999, from 10 till 12
o'clock. The members of the Guiding Circle have free entrance,
non-members pay 500 BEF for the whole course.
The teacher is John Goddeeris, teacher at the VMS.
The West-Flemish Guiding Circle is planning a biography about
Guido Gezelle. It's meant
to
be a readable and usealbe study about the life and the work of
this poet.
His whole life and all the literary work (prose and poetry) is
dealt with, from 1830 till 1899. It's not meant to be a collage
of the many biographies that have been published so far, but a
fresh view on his life, truthful and based upon hand-written
archieves. The 'myth' Gezelle is turned into a man of flesh and
blood, with his gifts and failings, his talents and what he has
done with them, his ideals and what has become of them.
This book will contain 150 pages.
The price will be about 500 BEF.
(Date of release: end of June 1999)
